Public Digital Identity System (SPID)

The Public Digital Identity System (SPID) is the main online identification tool for citizens and businesses with Public Administration. The SPID system allows you to access in a simple, fast and secure way the online services of public administration and the adhering private parties with a single digital identity. From February 28, 2021, as required by the “Simplification Decree”, SPID (Public Digital Identity System) credentials must be used to access the “Fast It” consular services portal. If you are an adult Italian citizen residing abroad, you can request SPID credentials by registering on the portal of an Identity Provider enabled for recognition (eg Sielte, Poste Italiane etc.). You must provide your valid Italian identity document, your tax code number, an e-mail address and a mobile phone number. The issue of credentials is free, with the exception of some paid recognition methods. By February 28, 2021, Public Administration will only have to use digital identities and electronic identity cards to identify citizens who access their online services. From that date, no further credentials can be issued through other registration forms.

The process to follow to obtain the SPID is outlined in this link: www.spid.gov.it/richiedi-spid
