Childhood Nutrition: Towards a Healthy Lifstyle

On the occasion of the Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World, the Italian Embassy, in collaboration with the NUS Human Potential Translational Research Program, organizes a scientific dissemination event dedicated to childhood nutrition.

The need for a healthy diet for the general well-being of the individual is in fact an increasingly important aspect in contemporary society. Care should be taken from the earliest years of life to avoid chronic non-communicable diseases related to excessive weight such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of obesity has reached epidemic proportions around the world, increasingly affecting children. Overweight or obesity in childhood are risky as they often persist into adulthood due to both physiological and behavioral factors such as adult diets based on energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugar and physical inactivity of adults due to the sedentary nature of many forms of work. In this regard, the available data on childhood obesity in Singapore and Italy and the policies undertaken to combat this growing phenomenon will be compared. In Italy, a National Observatory on childhood obesity was recently established, born from the collaboration between the Italian Federation of Pediatric Doctors, the Pediatric and Endocrinology Clinic of Giannina Gaslini Research Institute and the University of Genoa. Some of the initiatives undertaken in Italy and Singapore to prevent and address the problem will be discussed. From Italy we invited Prof Mohamad Maghnie, Director of the Gaslini Pediatric Clinic in Genoa to talk about it.

The event will be held on November 21, 2022, 3:30 -5:30 pm at MD1, Auditorium CRC, 10 Medical Drive, Singapore 117597.
