Cooperazione Politica

Political cooperation between Italy and Singapore has experienced a progressive intensification in recent years and it extends to many fields, from defence to the fight against terrorism to the prevention of tax avoidance policies.

The first Singapore State Visit to Italy made by President Tony Tan Ken Yam, from 22nd to 25th May 2016, sealed this growing relationship with a high-level event, allowing emphasis on the shared views between Italy and Singapore on a variety of topics on the agenda, in an international scene in continuous evolution.

It was also an opportunity to give further impetus to economic relations: President Tan was in fact accompanied by the Minister of Industry and Commerce S. Iswaran and a large business delegation, which participated in numerous events in various Italian cities. From the cultural point of view, during the visit numerous agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) were signed between Italian and Singaporean universities and public institutions. At the intergovernmental level an Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation has been signed. The event was widely covered also by the Singapore media:

In addition to the Visit of State, from Singapore side, there have been other important missions in Italy in recent years, such as the Lee Kuan Yew one, at the time he was Minister Mentor, in 2007 (Working visit to Italy by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew ), and the one of Secretary for Foreign Affairs Sam Tan in March 2012 during the ASEAN Awareness Forum held at the Foreign Ministry (art.1 | art.2 | art. 3). In June 2013, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Tan visited Italy again, where he held the first periodic of consultations with the Deputy Foreign Minister Bruno Archi under the 2009 Political Co-operation Memorandum. In May 2015, the Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni received his counterpart K. Shanmugam at the Farnesina .

The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Stefania Craxi visited Singapore in 2009, during the visit a Memorandum of Political Cooperation was concluded  to set a periodic consultations between their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. More recently, Undersecretary Della Vedova visited Singapore on several occasions, the last one in November 2016, to inaugurate the first edition of the Innovation Days, featuring more than thirty Italian start-ups.

In October 2014, the Minister of Infrastructure Maurizio Lupi went to Singapore for a meeting with his counterpart Lui Tuck Yew and the heads of the Port Authority and Singapore Airport. Minister of Economy and Finance Pier Carlo Padoan visited the City-State at the beginning of April 2015 to discuss issues related to information exchange and tax transparency (art.1 | art.2 ).

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations of Italy with the City-State (October 2015), an official visit was made by the former Prime Minister Romano Prodi to his counterpart Lee Hsien Loong and to his predecessor Goh Chock Tong, followed by a lecture at the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Public Policy .

In June 2016, Minister of Defence Sen. Roberta Pinotti attended the Asian Security Summit ("Shangri-La Dialogue") , which was held in Singapore from 3 to 5 June. This was the first time an Italian representative took part in the most important multilateral forum on Southeast Asian defence issues. Minister Pinotti also had fruitful exchanges with her counterparts through a intense agenda of bilateral meetings.

The Undersecretary for Economic Development Hon. Ivan Scalfarotto visited Singapore on the 10th March where he met the Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Dr. Koh Poh Koon. He also did a greeting to wine producers at the sixth edition of the Roadshow "Top Italian Wines" organized by Gambero Rosso and finally had a fruitful exchange of views with Senior Managing Director of Sovereign Fund Temasek, Michael Buchanan.

Bearing witness to growing Italian interest in Singapore, 2015 saw the establishment of the Italian-ASEAN Association, chaired by the former Prime Minister Enrico Letta: it aims to provide a tool to facilitate relations of the Italian System with a complex reality like ASEAN, supporting the operations of the Institutions.
