Political Cooperation

The first Singapore State Visit held by President Tony Tan Keng Yam in Italy, from 22nd to 25th May 2016, sealed this growing relationship with a high-level event, allowing us to underline the identity of views between Italy and Singapore on numerous topics on the agenda, in a constantly evolving international scenario.

It was also an opportunity to give further impetus to economic relations: President Tan was in fact accompanied by the Minister of Industry and Commerce S. Iswaran and a large business delegation, which participated in numerous events in various Italian cities . From the cultural point of view, during the visit numerous agreements and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between universities and Italian and Singaporean public bodies were concluded, while at the intergovernmental level an Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation was signed.

More recently, the visits of Foreign Ministers and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano and Enzo Moavero Milanesi and the Minister of Economy and Finance Giovanni Tria were held.

On 8 February 2018, Minister Angelino Alfano visited Singapore during an intense three-day event in South-East Asia, with stops also in Jakarta and Bangkok. The Minister met his counterpart, Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister of Commerce, Lim Hng Kiang, the leadership of the two sovereign funds of the country, Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) and Temasek Holding, and the president of the Economic Development Board ( EDB), Well Swan Gin.

On 25 and 26 March 2019, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giovanni Tria visited Singapore where he met the Director of the Monetary Authority, the Minister of Finance and heads of the GIC and Temasek Sovereign Funds, as well as the Board of the Chamber of Commerce and prominent representatives of the Italian community.

On May 9, 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, went on a mission to Singapore, a visit preceded by a stop in Vietnam. Minister Moavero held meetings at the highest level: with the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, and with Ambassador Chio Kiat Ow.

Previous visits

In May 2015, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni received his counterpart K. Shanmugam at the Farnesina.

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Pier Carlo Padoan visited the City-State at the beginning of April 2015, to discuss issues related to information exchange and fiscal transparency.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Italy's diplomatic relations with the City-State (October 2015), a visit by former Prime Minister Romano Prodi was received by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his predecessor Goh Chock Tong, followed by a conference at the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

In June 2016, the Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, attended the Asian Security Summit (c.d. "Shangri-La Dialogue") held in Singapore from 3 to 5 June. This was the first opportunity for an Italian representative to take part in the most important multilateral forum on defense issues of South-East Asia. Minister Pinotti, in addition to following the works of the summit, had profitable opportunities for exchange with her counterparts through a full program of bilateral meetings.

The Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Economic Development Ivan Scalfarotto carried out a mission in Singapore on March 10, 2017 during which he met the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore, Dr Koh Poh Koon, he inaugurated with an address I greet the sixth edition of Gambero Rosso's "Top Italian Wines" Roadshow and finally had a fruitful exchange of views with the Senior Managing Director of the sovereign fund Temasek, Michael Buchanan.
