Theft/loss of Passport and E.T.D.

In the event that the Italian / EU citizen has lost or has been robbed of his/her passport and does not have time to execute the necessary investigation for the issue of a new passport (e.g. a tourist who must leave the country promptly), the Consular Office issues a temporary travel document, also called E.T.D. (Emergency Travel Document), valid only for the return trip to Italy, to the country of permanent residence abroad or, in exceptional cases, to a different destination.

The citizen will have to report the theft or loss to the local Police Authorities to facilitate his/her transit at the border, and he/she will have to submit it to the Consular Authority.

In case of theft / loss of the passport,  the applicant must contact the Consular Authority by email or by phone (+65 62506022) to set the appointment for the issue of the E.T.D.

N.B. It is advisable to keep a photocopy of the most important documents (passport, identity card, credit card) in a place other than the one where the original documents are kept to facilitate assistance procedures in case of theft or loss.

Return of passports found abroad to the Italian consular offices

Passports that have been stolen or lost abroad and subsequently found by local authorities returned to the consular office in whose district of jurisdiction the theft or loss occurred.

Therefore, those who have recently suffered a theft / loss abroad and want to check if their passports have been found, are invited to contact the territorially competent consular office. Any withdrawal of the passport may take place in the following ways:

  • direct collection from the consular office;
  • sending by post, with the dispatch cost charged to the applicant.

Please note that after the maximum period of one year, starting from the date on which local Authorities returned the stolen or lost passports to the Consular office,  they will be destroyed without further communication if these passports are not claimed by the legitimate holders during that period.
