Marriage at the Embassy

To get married at the Italian diplomatic-consular premises in Singapore, it is necessary to submit an application for a consular marriage. Spouses can request the document by contacting the Consular Authority by e-mail or by phone.

The application must be signed by both spouses and presented in person to the consular office together with a photocopy of the valid identity documents of both of them.

The consular office will have to issue the certificate of No-Impediment (Nulla Osta) to the marriage for Italian citizens registered with AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad). To this end, Italian spouses must fill in the Self-Declaration to request the No-Impediment (Nulla Osta) to marriage by paying in Singapore dollars the due fee equivalent to 6.00 Euros. Once the request has been completed and the necessary checks have been carried out, the consular office will proceed to issue this certificate.

If the consular office accepts the application (as the requirements provided for by the law are met), the marriage banns can be requested.

The marriage celebration can be refused when local laws oppose it or when the parties do not reside in the same consular district.

The marriage banns

In Italy, the celebration of marriage must be preceded by the marriage banns, carried out by a Registrar. The marriage banns remain posted on the consular notice board for at least 8 days. The marriage can be celebrated 3 days after the marriage banns and within the following 180 days.

Spouses must complete this Form and sign it upon hand delivery to the diplomatic-consular authority.

The application for marriage banns is charged at 12 euros. The equivalent in Singapore dollars is subject to the quarterly updated exchange rates.

Application for Marriage Banns

It can be presented:

  • in person by the couple;
  • by an authorized third party with a special power of attorney written on plain paper and a copy of the valid identity documents of the spouses;

For those who are not EU citizens and residing in Italy, their signature must be affixed in the presence of a consular officer.

  • If the spouses are both Italian citizens residing abroad, it is necessary to apply for the marriage banns from the diplomatic-consular representation where the consular marriage will be celebrated. If they reside in two different consular districts, the marriage banns must be made at both diplomatic or consular Missions.
  • If one of the spouses (Italian or foreigner) resides in Italy while the other (Italian citizen) resides abroad, it is necessary to apply the marriage banns from the diplomatic-consular representation where the consular marriage will be celebrated, which in turn will ask the Municipality of residence in Italy to execute it. The marriage banns will therefore be made in both places of residence of the future spouses.
  • If the Italian spouse resides in Italy while the other is a foreign citizen and resides abroad, it is possible to alternatively: apply for the marriage banns from the diplomatic-consular representation or from the Italian municipality of residence, which will issue a proxy to the diplomatic or consular representation for the celebration of marriage.
  • If both spouses reside in Italy, it is necessary to request the marriage banns from the Municipality of residence. If they reside in two different municipalities, the marriage banns will be made in both municipalities. The Municipality will issue the proxy to the diplomatic or consular representation for the celebration of the marriage.
