Biography
A daring improviser with a marked melodic sensitivity, Danilo Rea is certainly one of the most famous italian pianists on the international jazz scene. Classical, rock, and pop studies influence his training and converge through jazz, his true passion, in an unmistakable and unique style composed of two fundamental ingredients: melody and improvisation. He made his debut with the historic Trio of Rome with Enzo Pietropaoli and Roberto Gatto; at the same time he accompanied the most important Italian singer/songwriters including Mina, Gino Paoli, Modugno. His talent soon led him to establish himself on the international scene and to play alongside the biggest names in jazz such as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Steve Grossman, Bob Berg, Phil Woods, Michael Brecker, Tony Oxley, Joe Lovano, Gato Barbieri, Aldo Romano, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Pérez, Michel Camilo, and Luis Bacalov. In 1997, with Enzo Pietropaoli and Fabrizio Sferra, he founded Doctor 3. Rea finds in the piano-solo dimension the ideal moment to give shape to his own expressive universe and his natural talent for improvisation. Rea’s first solo work was “Lost in Europe” (2000), composed during a tour in Europe. In 2003, he published “Lirico”, in which he mixed opera and jazz improvising on opera themes. Additionally, he was the first jazz musician to have a piano-solo concert at the Santa Cecilia Hall of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in 2003, and in 2006 he starred in a memorable concert at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In October 2015, “Somethingin our Way” (Warner Music Italy) came out, a new album in piano-solo inspired by the unforgettable repertoire of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. His frequent tours around the world solo, duo with Paolo Fresu/Enrico Rava, trio with Doctor 3 and recently with the very unique project “Bach is in the Air” together with classical pianist Ramin Bahrami, make Danilo the true italian “Ambassador”of music !!
