IWG event on the prevention and treatment of breast cancer

On Tuesday, 8 October 2019, as part of the activities for the month dedicated to breast cancer prevention, the Italian Women’s Group (IWG) in Singapore has organized, with the support of the Italian Embassy in Singapore, a scientific-informative initiative at the National University Hospital on the current state of breast cancer treatment and prevention. The President of IWG, Cecilia Sava, gave a brief opening speech followed by presentations of three specialists in the field, introduced by Nicola Bianchi, Scientific Attachè of the Embassy.

Dr. Antony Tang, a specialist in breast cancer surgery, described the optimal methods of prevention and screening. Prof. Philip Iau of the National University Cancer Institute presented the current data showing the increase of breast tumors all over the world in the last decades but with a comforting rise in the probability of survival, which is now close to 90%. Finally, Prof. Giorgia Pastorin, Director of the Center for Pharmaceutical Innovation and Research at the National University of Singapore, has described the most recent pharmacological and chemotherapeutic techniques. In particular it appears very promising, even if it is still mainly in the research phase, the use of nanotechnologies, a technique in which Prof. Pastorin is one of the leading experts in the field.

Following the presentations, there was a broad and informal discussion between the large audience and the speakers.
