Andrea Salustri’s Materia: Italian object theatre at the Singapore International Festival of Arts

Italian art is once again protagonist at the Singapore International Festival of Arts, with Andrea Salustri’s performance of object theatre, MATERIA. The Roman artist will explore the possibilities of polystyrene by engaging the public in considering how we interact with objects. Materials’ artistry and magic aims at involving the audience so to let it project its own narrative on the images presented on stage. Within a set score, objects are free to perform and take initiative. By doing this, MATERIA will explore the balance between being a facilitator and being a performer, as the focus gradually shifts from the person manipulating the objects, to the act of manipulation, and finally to the object being manipulated. At the same time, the immersive experience investigates the borders between contemporary circus, dance, and physical theatre.

The show’s features are in line with this year’s SIFA guiding theme, namely “The Anatomy of Performance”. Between 2022 and 2024, indeed, the Festival will bring focus on what ‘performance’ in an international performing arts festival can encompass, through both physical and virtual spaces.

MATERIA will be playing at the SOTA Studio Theatre on May 20, at 3 PM and 8 PM, as well as on May 21 at 3 PM. In addition, after Saturday (May 20) evening performance, the audience will have the opportunity of assisting a post-talk show with Salustri.

The initiative is supported by the Embassy of Italy in Singapore and is part of the 2023 edition of the Italian Festival in Singapore.
