Italy and Singapore enjoy friendly and longstanding relations. Italy was one of the first countries to recognize Singapore following its independence in 1965. Singapore declared its independence on August 14, and diplomatic relations were established a few weeks later, on October 28.
In recent years, political exchanges have intensified. In February 2023, Undersecretary Tripodi visited the country for the inauguration of the exhibition The Great Italian Vision – Farnesina Collection. In March 2023, Undersecretary for Defence Perego di Cremnago participated as a speaker at the Singapore Defence and Technology Summit. In May 2023, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Rixi travelled to Singapore to visit the headquarters of PSA, one of the world’s leading port operators.
On 24 June 2024, the President of the Republic of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, paid an official visit to Italy, where he met with the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella—accompanied by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Edmondo Cirielli—and with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. President Shanmugaratnam was joined by Singapore’s Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Alvin Tan, who met with Italy’s Deputy Minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, Hon. Valentino Valentini.
On the occasion of the stop in Singapore by the Italian Navy training ship Amerigo Vespucci, Deputy Minister Valentini visited the country from 23 to 26 October 2024 and met with Minister of State Alvin Tan. On 28 October, Undersecretary of State for Defence, Hon. Perego di Cremnago, met with Minister of State for Defence, Heng Chee How.
During his mission to Singapore on 29–30 April 2025, Deputy Minister Valentini once again met with Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Alvin Tan.
