The registration with the A.I.R.E. (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) is a right and duty of the citizen (Law No. 470/1988, Article 6) and constitutes the prerequisite for accessing consular services provided by representations abroad, as well as for the exercise of important rights. Law No. 213 of December 30, 2023, in effect from January 1, 2024, introduces a new sanctioning regime for Italian citizens who move abroad and do not fulfill the registry obligations established by law within 90 days from the date of transfer. Italian citizens residing abroad and not properly registered with the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad (A.I.R.E.) risk an administrative fine of up to 1000 euros for each year of non-registration with A.I.R.E., for a maximum of 5 years.
