Postal Voting for Italian Citizens Residing Abroad and Option to Vote in Italy
With Presidential Decrees dated March 31, 2025, and published in the Official Gazette on the same day, the dates for the abrogation referendum vote under Article 75 of the Italian Constitution have been officially set for June 8 and June 9, 2025.
Voting is a fundamental right safeguarded by the Italian Constitution. According to Law No. 459 of December 27, 2001, Italian citizens residing abroad who are registered in the electoral rolls are entitled to vote by mail. The electoral package will be sent to their registered address. Citizens are strongly advised to verify and update their personal information and address with their local Consular Office, preferably through the online portal Fast It.
Alternatively, voters registered with AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) may opt to vote in Italy at their municipality of electoral registration. This choice must be communicated in writing to the Consulate no later than April 10, 2025, ten days after the announcement of the referendum.
Voters who choose to vote in Italy will receive a notification postcard from their respective municipalities, allowing them to cast their votes at polling stations in Italy. This option is valid only for the specific referendum for which it is expressed.
To communicate this option, the voter can complete the relevant form downloadable here or he/she can write it on plain paper by indicating his/her full name, date and place of birth, residential address, voter’s signature, accompanied by a copy of his/her identity document.
The completed form, signed and accompanied by an identity document, may be submitted via:
- In-person delivery: At the Consular Desk during office hours (Monday–Thursday: 9:30 AM–5 PM; Friday: 9:30 AM–3 PM).
- Email: singapore.anagrafe@esteri.it
It is the voter’s responsibility to ensure that their option communication is received by the Consular Office within the deadline (10 April 2025). Late submissions will not be considered valid.
The choice to vote in Italy can be revoked by submitting a written communication following the same procedures and deadlines as outlined above.
Citizens opting to return to Italy for voting will not receive reimbursement for travel expenses but may benefit from tariff concessions within Italian territory.
