A few days after the confirmation of the second term of Fabiola Gianotti as Director General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for the period 2021-2025, Prof. Luciano Maiani visited Singapore following an invitation of the Embassy of Italy. Prof. Maiani was also Director General of CERN in the period 1999-2003, in addition to having many other important roles at national and international level, including the Presidency of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the Presidency of the National Research Council (CNR).
During his visit, Prof. Maiani held a series of seminars and meetings with important representatives of the Singapore scientific community and with numerous Italian researchers.
On December 4, Prof. Maiani gave a general seminar entitled “CERN: an International Laboratory between Fundamental Science and Technological Innovation” in which he described the history, the scientific results and the many applications of the largest laboratory in the world to which Italian scientists have provided fundamental contribution in terms of innovative ideas and in terms of prestigious roles, as well. The seminar was organized at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in collaboration with the Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity (NISTH) and with the Graduate College. A large public of over 100 scientists and students participated.
On December 6th Prof. Maiani also held a seminar on his latest theoretical physics research at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
