The Message of Mario Andrea Vattani, Ambassador of Italy in Singapore.
Welcome to the sixth edition of the International Week of Italian Cuisine, which will take place in Singapore from the 21st to the 28th of November.
Sustainability and heritage will be some of the keywords in the series of events that will promote Italian culinary excellence, with a focus on growing exchanges between Italian tradition and Singaporean flavours.
You will find that the programme includes show-cooking, dinners with top chefs, workshops, special promotions, food and wine tastings, as well as cooking masterclasses. I believe this week will serve as an opportunity for Italian food and wine to connect people while they discover new flavours, and increase their awareness of food sustainability.
Singaporeans are more and more curious about Italian cuisine. Statistics show that retail sales of Italian food products increased dramatically in the last two years. Italian restaurants provided more and more takeaway choices, distributors added new Italian products to the market, while many Singaporeans started to experiment with cooking Italian dishes at home.
Singaporeans have a very broad perception of culinary culture, ranging from top restaurants to lively hawker centres. As Italians, we experience the cuisine as an open language. This allows us to move freely within the richness of our own regional and territorial identities. I believe that this particular approach to a varied heritage resonates with Singapore, a truly international hub of comparison and coexistence between flavours and cultures.
I take this opportunity to thank the Italian Trade Agency, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, the Academy of Italian Cuisine, the Association for the promotion of Italian culture in Singapore (APICS), the Italian Women’s Group (IWG) and all the restaurants, sponsors, organizations and participants for their precious contribution to the organization of all events.
