Visa Types


Schengen visa is issued for a short stay (less than 90 days) in Italy/Malta and in all countries of the Schengen area (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland). The trip may have one or multiple entries.

It is possible to apply for a Schengen visa when:

  1. Italy/Malta is the only country of destination of the trip;
  2. the trip involvesmore than one Schengen country and Italy / Malta is the main destination of the trip in terms of duration or purpose of the stay;
  3. the main destination cannot be determined on the basis ofthe criteria indicated in points 1) and 2), when the applicant intends to enter the Schengen area through the external borders of Italy.

Reasons for issuing the Schengen Visa: 




Holders of these visas can enter and stay in Italy and circulate freely in the countries of the Schengen areafor a period not exceeding 90 days per semester. 

Reasons for issuing National Visa: 

  • Reason: Study (University single-course; Vocational Training; University Enrolment; Post-Graduate studies; Student Mobility/Exchange Programme; Internship; Language course in private school)

    Starting from 12 June 2020, all the students who are applying for both short and long-term study visa (Schengen or National) to attend any courses in Italian Universities, will have to login the portal of “ UNIVERSITALY “ to fill in and complete the pre-enrolment application / online registration, as stated in the circular of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) published last June on “Studiare in Italia” portal. In addition to the documents required for the issue of a study visa, the student must also submit the summary of the application generated by the portal’s platform and validated by the University.

    This procedure will also be implemented next year for the enrolment in study courses at Academies of Fine Arts and Music (AFAM).
