A) Marriage in Italy of Italian citizens residing abroad
Italian citizens residing abroad who wish to get married in Italy must apply for marriage banns from the Italian diplomatic or consular representation where they are registered. Once the marriage banns have been made, the Consular Representation authorizes the Italian Municipality by a proxy to the marriage celebration.
Required Documents for the Marriage Banns
To apply for the marriage banns it is necessary to:
- book an appointment online by clicking here;
- go to the consular office in person with a valid identity document / passport, sign the Self-Declaration to apply for the No Impediment (Nulla Osta) to the marriage and the marriage banns application form;
- in case of impossibility to appear in person, appoint a third person with a special power of attorney written on plain paper and a copy of the valid identity documents / passports of the spouses;
The application for marriage banns is charged at 12 euros. The equivalent in Singapore dollars is subject to the quarterly updated exchange rates.

B) Marriage in Italy of foreign citizens
Foreign citizens wishing to get married in Italy must:
- book an appointment online here;
- go to the consular office in person with a valid identity document / passport and sign the marriage banns application form;
- in case of impossibility to appear in person, appoint a third person with a special power of attorney written on plain paper and a copy of the valid identity documents / passports of the spouses;
- present the certificate of no impediment (Nulla Osta) to the marriage issued by the authorities in charge of the country of citizenship, legalized and translated into Italian, or the certificate of legal capacity to marry if they are citizens of one of the countries that have ratified the 1980 Munich Convention.
(States that have ratified the Munich Convention: Austria, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Moldova, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey. Certificates issued under this Convention are exempt from legalization or any equivalent formality in the territory of each State party.)
Citizens of a State not belonging to the European Union and not residing in Italy, beside the application for no impediment (Nulla Osta) to marriage, they must also submit the remaining documentation proving the requirements referred to in art. 51 of Presidential Decree n.396/2000.
The couple, in the cases referred to in art. 52 of Presidential Decree 396/2000, may submit a copy of the marriage authorization provision granted by the court in the presence of an impediment at the time of applying for marriage banns or send it subsequently by ordinary post.
